PGA’s Commitment to Sustainability - On Sets and On Screen
The Producers Guild of America has been a leading advocate for sustainability in the entertainment industry for more than 15 years. Over this time, PGA has worked and continues to be at the forefront of organizing climate educational programs for production and storytelling; mentorship around set protocols for decarbonization strategies; and a wide variety of sustainability panels, workshops, and trainings for members and the entertainment industry. This work happens in collaborations across film festivals, industry conferences, international partnerships, multi-stakeholder engagements, and PGA publications and communication outlets.
In 2010, the Producers Guild collaborated with studio partners (now known as the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance) to create the Green Production Guide, the toolkit designed to reduce the film, television and streaming industry's carbon footprint and environmental impact. This site also features a worldwide database of vendors that provide sustainable goods and services.
PGA represented entertainment industry efforts in Paris at COP 21. Leading into the United Nations' COP26 climate summit, PGA issued a “call to action” to our industry to transition to clean energy to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030, and accelerate climate action to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Clean Energy continues to be a top priority in our collaboration with the Inter-Guild and Union Clean Energy Working Group. PGA participates in the UNFCCC Entertainment & Culture for Climate Action - Film and Television (ECCA).
By winter 2021, the Producers Guild and Writers Guild were joining efforts to promote climate storytelling with studios, unions and guilds. PGA has produced webinars and hosts trainings with the Writers Guid in presentations for show runners, creative producers and writers in collaborators with NRDC’s Rewrite the Future.
In 2022, the Producers Guild announced that it would begin phasing out physical screeners during awards season. By the 2023 awards season, the organization fully eliminated all physical screeners and expanded its collaboration with Indee in creating a dedicated screener platform for its awards submitters and members.
The Producers Guild regularly hosts programming and events for its members on sustainability on screen, including its monthly Sustainability Office Hour sessions, popular “Producers on Producing Sustainably” series and "Power Budgeting Tools for Sustainable Production" demo (tool here). These deep dives have trained a spotlight on how the producers of films and TV shows such as Everything Everywhere All at Once, Joker: Folie à Deux, Nope and True Detective: Night Country successfully brought sustainability into their story lines and sets. PGA members can watch these sessions through our Video Exclusives page. Available to all are articles on sustainability in PGA's Produced By magazine.
